It’s the morning after the night before and you are searching for those hangover cures.
Questioning your choices and last night’s decisions! Did I really drink that much? Why do I feel so hungover? How can I get rid of my hangover?
Most of us who drink alcohol will have likely overindulged at least one time in our life. Whether it was recently as an adult or when you took advantage of fake ids for sale as a youngster. Waking the next day and suffering as a consequence of your actions is a familiar feeling.
Over time and with experience, we often find our own hangover cures. What works for 1 doesn’t always work for another sadly and we develop our own way of coping with a hangover.
Help Deal With Your Hangover
What Is A Hangover?
A hangover is an effect of consuming alcohol, usually too much alcohol. It can be nausea, dehydration, upset stomach, rapid pulse, excessive sweating, headache and much more.
It is suggested that we shouldn’t consume any more than 14 single measures of alcohol per week. That should also be spread over multiple days and not binge-drunk on one night.
When some people drink alcohol, they experience a warm flush and redness of the face. People metabolise alcohol differently, and some individuals find that preventative measures to help with their hangover the next day. When we drink, our liver works overtime to rid our bodies of toxins. This extra pressure on our livers is what makes all of the unwelcome, unpleasant hangover symptoms.
As we age we can suffer from a hangover more so than when we are younger. This is to do with body age and generally how well your organs work. Our metabolic systems slow down with age, as well as having a higher body mass.
Typically the older our bodies are the more fat they have on them. This extra body fat absorbs the alcohol for a longer period of time, therefore making alcohol stay in our bodies for longer. This is also why as we age we can suffer from 2-day hangovers. 2-day hangovers are where our bodies just take that much longer to get rid of the toxins, it can even take a whole 72 hours to feel better.
Our genetic DNA and blood type are also another 2 reasons people cope with hangovers better.
Hangover Cures That Actually Work
The best hangover cure is to rehydrate, water not more alcohol. Keep clear of tea and coffee too as they contain caffeine which will dehydrate you further. If you are able to make a smoothie with added water this would be amazing for you. Assuming you can deal with the noise of the smoothie maker.
The basis of your hangover is to do with dehydration, as alcohol is a diuretic. While you are consuming alcohol you are likely to need the toilet more as well as sweating more, whether you notice it or not. This is how your body works to remove the toxins as soon as you start drinking.
With your body constantly trying to get rid of toxins, it is also getting rid of all the natural water your body needs. Being dehydrated is the reason why you have that headache and why you had poor sleep.
If you are able to drink water before you go to bed, this will help you feel slightly better in the morning. It will keep you slightly more hydrated as you will have stopped drinking alcohol at this point too. A great hangover cure is to prevent it before it starts.
A more direct way to tackle the hangover is with a liquid IV infusion, which is a specialised intravenous therapy administered via a drip (or banana bag) and designed to alleviate the symptoms of a hangover. Now, this might sound drastic, but going to get a banana bag for a hangover is becoming increasingly sought after. Aesthetic centres and dedicated liquid IV salons are offering these exact hangover cures daily. They help to rehydrate your body, whilst also replenishing essential nutrients.
What to eat to help a hangover?
As alcohol affects your stomach the best way to settle an upset stomach post-alcohol is to eat something carb-heavy.
Carbohydrates are easily digested which is what your body needs right now. Eating greasy food is a myth, as the greasy doesn’t soak anything up and can actually leave you running to the toilet.
Eggs cooked without oil on brown toast would be a great choice too. A banana or some other water-rich food is another good hangover cure.
Does taking Ibuprofen help a hangover?
Simply put yes, taking ibuprofen will help your hangover.
There are some recent studies which suggest the hangover is more to do with inflation than just dehydration. As Ibrupofen is an anti-filamentary it helps lessen the signs associated with inflammation in the body.
A more natural way to help battle inflation is to consume some ginseng to deal with your hangover. Ginseng is said to have a positive effect on alcohol metabolism as well as overall health. It supports the body’s natural defences and can have a positive impact on your general health as well as your mental health.
Hangover Anxiety
Did you know that you could be making your hangover worse by dwelling on how you are feeling?
Your hangover can spike anxiety around feeling hungover and make you feel even more hungover. If you laze around the following day and think about how unwell you are feeling your brain can actually make you feel like you are worse than you are.
The best cure for a lot of people is to actually get up and do something, after ensuring they are re-hydrated and fed of course.
Prevent A Hangover
If you would rather not get hungover then ensure after each unit of alcohol you drink a glass of water. So for every pint of beer assuming it’s only 1 unit, you drink a glass of water. This will lessen the effects of being dehydrated which is why it is always wise to drink water before bed too.
Never drink without eating a substantial meal beforehand. The food will help line your stomach and absorb the alcohol too. This will also help with you getting too drunk as the food will digest some of the alcohol with it rather than going straight into your bloodstream.
Avoid caffeine mixers with your spirits. Energy drinks such as Red Bull will always make the effects of alcohol worse the next day. It’s like being double dehydrated and will cause the worst types of hangovers.
We all make our own choices when it comes to what we consume and how much we consume. Being prepared for the hangover with the hangover cure foods and liquids will make coping and fixing your hangover easier.
Can you actually cure a hangover?
Hangovers can be challenging to deal with, but with these tips, you can minimise their impact and recover more quickly. Remember, the best way to avoid a hangover is to drink responsibly, know your limits and stay hydrated throughout the night.
However, if you find yourself facing a hangover, try incorporating these strategies into your routine to help ease the symptoms and restore your well-being.
Additionally, everyone’s body reacts differently to alcohol, so what works for one person may not work for another. If you have persistent or severe hangover symptoms, it’s advisable to seek medical attention.
Taking care of your body and prioritising self-care will ensure a smoother recovery process. Remember these essential hangover cures to ensure you bounce back after a night out.
