I have some great ideas on how to improve your morning routine. You might find it will actually make your day more productive too.

A lot of us wake up and struggle to actually get out of bed.

There can be a number of reasons for this but it’s always wise to start off on the right foot by organising your week.

Improve your morning to improve your day with these ideas.

Improve Your Morning

1) Snooze

Your first mistake would be to hit that snooze button on your alarm.

If you snooze and then go back to sleep you are breaking your sleep cycle. That means the further sleep you have unless it’s significant isn’t going to make you feel any better.

That extra 5 or 10 minutes of sleep can leave you feeling worse than you would normally.

If you struggle waking straight away try and wake up light instead of your alarm clock.

2) Skip Breakfast

Most of us wake up feeling dehydrated and hungry after an excess of 8 hours of fasting.

Breakfast is supposed to be the most important meal of the day. You need to rehydrate and replenish your body to get it ready for the day ahead.

Hydration is especially important, even if you are not particularly thirsty just try drinking a glass of water. Your skin will also thank you for the water consumption.

Tea and coffee are typical morning drinks as both contain caffeine. Caffeine is a diuretic so this will make your kidneys work faster and ultimately make you need the toilet more. Try having a glass or pint of water before your coffee or tea to help with this water loss.

A high-carbohydrate breakfast would be best if you have a busy day to give you energy. Try a tasty overnight oats recipe or a microwave mug cake as your first meal of the day.

3) Social Media

Is Facebook or Instagram really the first thing you need to check in the morning? Definitely not.

Seeing what friends and family have shared on their social media while you have been sleeping isn’t really going to give you much motivation.

Some social media posts can be triggering for you to read. You could be jealous or annoyed by something you have just seen first thing in the morning, and it will instantly set your mood for the day.

Try to leave your social media notifications until you have at least left the house where possible.

4) No Routine

Not being set in a routine can leave you a bit in limbo when it comes to your mornings.

Have something set out so you know exactly what you are doing each morning. You can obviously vary this from time to time when something else comes up, but your typical day should start the same way.

I spend the first half an hour of each morning doing exactly the same thing. Weekends vary especially if I am treating myself to a lay-in as part of my self-care.

5) Starting Work

Your morning routine should not include doing work. You save your work for when you get into the office or after you have done your morning routine

Even reading work emails is a big no-no, as this doesn’t consist of just reading it. You will then be thinking about what the email had in it. You need to save that for while you are working or at the very earliest on your way to work

Most people feel overworked and over-tired generally, so you need to spend your morning on you

Be kind to yourself and your body first thing in the morning
