Period Self-Care Tips

Period Self-Care Tips

Types of Menstrual Sanitary Items

Menstrual sanitary items are essential products designed to manage menstrual flow, providing comfort, hygiene, and confidence to those who menstruate. These items include pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and period underwear, each offering different absorbency levels, convenience, and sustainability.

Pads are externally worn and come in various sizes and absorbencies, while tampons are inserted into the vagina and are discreet and effective for active lifestyles. A menstrual cup is a safe alternative to tampons, also inserted into the vagina, are reusable and environmentally friendly, often lasting several years. Period underwear, another reusable option, combines absorbency with the comfort of regular underwear.

The availability and choice of these products have significantly evolved, reflecting advances in technology, a greater emphasis on environmental impact, and the diverse needs and preferences of menstruating individuals. Following a self care routine while on your period take a look at the application you are using and ensure it is the best option for you.

Hydration Station

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to combat period discomfort is by staying hydrated.

Water can help alleviate bloating and keep your energy levels up. Herbal teas, like peppermint or ginger, are also excellent choices, as they can soothe cramps and ease digestion. So, raise that water bottle high and keep sipping!

Nourish Your Body

Embrace the power of nutritious foods. While the temptation to reach for comfort foods may be strong, opting for a balanced diet can do wonders for your mood and energy levels.

Foods rich in iron, like leafy greens and lean proteins, can help combat fatigue, a common companion during your period.

Move Your Body

It might be the last thing you feel like doing, but light exercise can be a game-changer.

Activities like yoga, walking, or gentle stretching can ease cramps and release those feel-good endorphins. Listen to your body, and choose a form of exercise that feels right for you.

Pamper Yourself on your Period

Treat yourself to some self-care. Whether it’s a warm bath, a cosy blanket, or your favourite movie, find what brings you comfort.

Consider investing in some essential oils like lavender or chamomile for aromatherapy as they can help create a relaxing environment.

This time of the month often brings with it unwelcome menstrual spots, deep cleanse your skin and give yourself a facial.

Mindful Moments

Practice mindfulness to keep stress at bay. Engage in activities like meditation or deep breathing exercises to centre yourself.

Stress can exacerbate period symptoms, so taking a few moments each day to check in on your mental well-being can make a significant difference.

Comfortable Clothing

Say goodbye to restrictive clothing and hello to comfort. Opt for loose-fitting, breathable fabrics that won’t add to any discomfort you may be feeling.

Your favourite pair of cosy leggings or a loose-fitting dress could become your new period wardrobe staples.

Stay Connected

Share your feelings with friends or family who understand. Sometimes, a good chat or a laugh with loved ones can lift your spirits.

Knowing you’re not alone in this experience can make the tough days a bit brighter. Let’s be honest, chances are someone in your circle is menstruating at the same time as you.

Stay Organised

Be prepared for your period. Keep track of your cycle using apps or a traditional calendar, I like to use the app called Flo.

Having supplies on hand can help minimize stress when your period arrives unexpectedly.

period self care

Remember, your period is a natural and essential part of being a woman. Embrace it, and more importantly, embrace yourself.

These period self-care tips are just a starting point. Customise them to fit your unique needs and preferences.

Periods may bring challenges, but with a little extra care, you can navigate this time of the month with confidence and grace. Here’s to embracing our flows and finding joy in every cycle.
