The internet has transformed shopping habits and the coronavirus pandemic had a significant impact on where our money goes. It has changed the way we spend online for our shopping, hobbies, and habits.

E-commerce trends have shifted from luxury goods and services to everyday necessities. The recent huge cost of living increase has impacted online shopping even more, as people look to find ways to save some money.

Homebound shoppers abandoned long-held shopping habits. As a result, e-commerce accelerated, compressing a decade’s worth of digital adoption. High-speed internet reached more households, making a significant difference in the ease to shop online.

Governments had to respond to the changing landscape. For customer protection, systemic challenges related to connectivity and financial inclusion were required. Governments were required to provide low-cost, high-quality broadband internet to underserved areas. Moreover, policies were enacted to increase financial inclusion and trust in e-commerce businesses.

The Internet has Transformed Shopping Habits

Online spending is high but declining

We’re still spending a lot more money online than we were before the coronavirus pandemic. The adjusted internet sales accounted for 26.6% of all official retail sales in May 2022. It was up from 19.7% in February 2020.

We have begun to return to in-store shopping but online shopping remains to be a major trend. The COVID-19 crisis is likely to have long-term consequences for e-commerce.

Demand has shifted away from traditional retail and towards e-commerce. Because of the COVID-19 crisis, many OECD countries have reduced physical interactions. Self-imposed social distancing has halted a large part of traditional brick-and-mortar retail.

Four significant consumer shifts

Consumer spending is increasing

Americans are starting to spend again. 51% of consumers expressed to splurge and indulge in post-pandemic revenge spending.

Higher-income millennials are expected to outspend all other groups. Especially on clothing, footwear, travel, and experiences like dining, concerts, and spectator sports.

E-commerce is celebrating to the next level

According to credit and debit card data, online spending has increased by 20% since January 2020. The digital future has unquestionably arrived.

In 2019, 92% of consumers who attempted online shopping converted. With tactile shopping experiences, e-commerce has also redefined convenience.

Rebalancing the domestic economy

Consumers who worked and spent the majority of their free time at home boosted the homebody economy. To make the lockdowns more bearable, 28 % of consumers invested in amenities. These included home theatres, gyms, and studios.

Even the most contented homebody is eager to spend time and money outside the home on dining, entertainment, and travel.

Brand loyalty is shattered

The pandemic caused unprecedented channel switching and brand loyalty disruption. A whopping 75% of consumers tried new shopping behaviours. Many cited convenience and value as reasons.

Fully 39% of them, primarily Gen Z and millennials, abandoned trusted brands in favour of new ones. This restlessness is reflected in the fact that many younger consumers continue to look for brands that reflect their values.

Social media has been a huge influence on the awareness of new and upcoming brands. Tiktok and Instagram fill our feeds with new businesses and take their spending away from recognisable, mainstream brands.

Four key business takeaways

Operate a speed-operated operating model

A rapid operating model can empower multidisciplinary teams to use analytics more productively. This can ease making quick decisions.

Companies will need to incorporate customer-centred strategies and real-time analytics to stay on track. Assemble a team of CFOs and CMOs to make real-time, data-driven decisions in response to customer needs.

Using analytics to drive personalisation

Setting businesses on a growth path necessitates a thorough understanding of their customers. It is important to create moments that matter to them through personalization.

Use advanced analytics to identify reliable demand markers to see how your customers are moving.

Use forecasting models to identify pockets of growth and act to capture demand. Win new customers, and strengthen existing ones’ trust and loyalty

Examine your eco-system again

Speed of action will only get you so far if other players in the ecosystem do not move as you do. Rethinking partnerships is critical for dealing with the rapid pace of change required for creating an extraordinary impact. Create an ecosystem based on trust, with systems and processes integrated to make decisions.

The evolution goes on

When it comes to shopping, all customers have the same basic expectations. They want what they want when they want it and don’t want to pay too much for it.

This is why e-commerce has become the preferred method of shopping for consumers.

E-commerce provides consumers with information and the ability to shop on various devices. It allows them to share their experiences with others. Especially the ones which have completely changed their expectations. Customer shopping habits will continue to evolve as technology advances. The businesses will need to adapt to remain relevant.
