A fantastic way to help your day-to-day is to practise gratitude.

Practising gratitude has become a very important part of my daily routine, and I am really feeling the benefits. It is also quite a new hobby for me.

It started to help me focus more on the good rather than the negative things that were happening in my life at the time. Even though I feel I am through what I felt was a destructive time, I am continuing to maintain gratitude as it gives a sense of fulfilment. It doesn’t erase or change anything that has happened but it helps with how I feel and how I deal with situations.

We have different struggles and paths in life but we can at least once a day be thankful. Being thankful is a way to train your brain for emotional resilience. Helping us to be happier and more satisfied with the life we have. There have even been studies which show a direct correlation between gratitude and being less stress

How To Practise Gratitude

Our brains can often get clouded with negativity and this can weigh us down and leave us feeling overwhelmed.

Not to say we should just forget about the negative occurrences altogether. But to spend more time focusing on the positive to help make you feel more grateful.

Something like having a roof over your head and food to eat is something to be thankful for. There are a lot of people who are not so fortunate to have such luxuries.

A great way to practise gratitude is to use a practising gratitude book. This is a brilliant way to visually see all the things you are grateful for as you can write them down. On days when you are not feeling so well and bogged down, taking a read of your journal can reduce your stress.

Having a gratitude journal is like a diary for all things positive. We all seek enrichment through different things, whether these be tangible objects or intangible.

Collating our daily thoughts into a gratitude journal will be a constant reminder of how lucky we are in life.

5 Benefits of Gratitude

  1. Practising gratitude makes us happier people. It makes us less envious of other people’s happiness and reduces feelings of depression.
  2. Improves our self-esteem and confidence. Seeing our journal full of things to be grateful for makes us feel more confident in our lives and our abilities.
  3. Writing your gratitude down can actually help you sleep better. You will have less brain fog at bedtime and less worry enabling you to get a better night’s sleep.
  4. We become nicer people to be around. With our mentalities focusing more on the positives, we are a lot friendlier to others we meet and work with.
  5.  We will become more resilient which is a component of mental well-being. We can handle negativity and life pressures better as we become more resilient.

The Key To Gratitude

Make practising gratitude a part of your daily routine. It is often best practised at night as a reflection of the day you have just had.

Keep your points very specific. For example, if someone complimented something about you today write the compliment, not just that you were complimented. If you saw a beautiful flower in the park, write the colour of the flower and how it made you feel seeing it.

The more specific you are with your descriptions the more thought-evoking they will be when you come to read them back in the future.

If writing in a journal is too much of a commitment for you initially, write notes on pieces of paper and put them in a jar. The idea is to keep them all together in a safe place for you to be able to go back to and look at later. Watching your happiness jar fill up with all your notes will also boost your mood.

We all find happiness in different ways but one thing we can all do is be grateful, even for the small things.

Hopefully, this will encourage you to practise gratitude daily and help you live a more peaceful life.
