These tips to increase skin firmness will change your skincare routine. As you get older, your skin will naturally lose its natural plumpness and become less defined with a decrease in the production of collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin—which allow skin firmness and elasticity.

Skin elasticity is the skin’s ability to be stretched and get back to its original form. When elastosis—a term used for the loss of skin’s elasticity—occurs, the skin eventually gets more saggy and crinkled. You’ll notice that when you slightly move your eyelids or even a part of your skin, it won’t bounce back the way it used to. Perhaps, you may have also noticed that when you were rubbing your eyes or putting on makeup.

There is hope, as there are ways to rebuild the collagen in your face and skin if you are concerned about your ageing appearance.

Why your skin loses its firmness

In addition to ageing, your skin loses its elasticity and firmness prematurely because of multiple reasons. One is due to ultraviolet (UV) rays emitted by the sun. These rays penetrate your skin’s dermis and eventually destroy collagen and elastin.

The second reason is skin dehydration, which happens when you do not have enough water intake to keep your skin hydrated. Another is saccharification, which happens when you consume large amounts of sugary food and beverages. As a result, your skin also loses its elasticity.

We are always prone to losing our skin’s elasticity over time. But do not worry though! With some lifestyle changes, you can still keep your skin feeling firm and looking glowy.

Let’s read on!

Tips To Increase Skin Firmness

1. Boost Your Skin’s Collagen

Collagen is a protein that is naturally produced in the body. It helps improve skin health and skin elasticity, reduces wrinkle visibility, and increases blood flow to the skin. It also keeps your skin smooth, giving it a supple and youthful look.

To achieve firmer skin, stimulate your collagen production by regularly using products that have ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin c, retinol, ginseng, aloe vera, and other antioxidants. Of course, in addition to knowing how you can achieve better skin health, make sure to also understand the causes of wrinkles and other skin care concerns so you can better avoid and address them.

2. Add antioxidants to your skincare routine

Antioxidants are powerful substances that help safeguard your skin’s surface from oxidative damage brought about by UV rays, pollution, and free radicals—molecules with unpaired and reactive electrons. These free radicals cause skin cell concerns and may lead to various skin-related diseases due to the unhealthy chain of chemical reactions they bring.

Antioxidants enable you to enjoy firmer skin because of their moisture-retention and anti-ageing properties. So, these should be included in your skincare non-negotiables.

3. Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated is critical to ensure skin elasticity and firmness. This is primarily because your skin’s outermost layer can have the moisture required to flush away toxins and carry nutrients to your skin’s cells.

Your skin is your body’s largest organ. And with water, your skin gets rejuvenated, making it feel and look smooth and supple while keeping it moisturised and firm. Water also helps repair dry, flaky skin, so it is vital to keep yourself hydrated all the time. Per health experts, it is recommended to take around six to eight glasses of water daily.

4. Never forget to use sunscreen

Sunscreens are often overlooked. For many, they are only good when you go to the beach and bask under the scorching heat of the sun. However, did you know that they also help reduce the visibility of wrinkles, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation with constant use?

It is no secret that these common skin concerns are mainly caused by UV light exposure, which accelerates the ageing process.

To keep your skin protected from risks, sunscreen is the best option!  Make sure to wear sunscreen regularly and religiously to guard your skin and keep it at its best.

5. Have a skin healthy diet

Your diet essentially determines your skin health. No matter how much you put on “miracle-worker” skincare products, if your diet goes against your skin, your skincare efforts may still be in vain.

Make sure to also keep your skin nourished and restored with antioxidant-rich food like fruits and vegetables. You can also add some turmeric plants, leafy greens, and essential fatty acids found in salmon and almonds to your diet.

6. Embrace an active lifestyle

Inflammation in the body signals the breakdown of collagen and elastin, resulting in saggy, less firm, and unhealthy skin. To lessen this and equip yourself to reverse ageing’s early signs, embracing an active lifestyle is the key.

According to the American Heart Association, adults should ideally get at least 75 minutes of vigorous activity weekly or 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. It can also be a combination of both. Such activities may include walking, weightlifting, and more.

However, remember not to pressure yourself to do a full-blown workout. Gradually begin incorporating exercise into your daily routine and opt for a routine that works for you and your schedule. In time, you’ll witness healthy changes.

7. Get a good night’s sleep

Good sleep can make all the difference. Complete sleep does not only keep your immune system stronger, your brain sharper, and your skin healthier. It also opens the door for your cells to get the downtime they need to undergo a repair cycle.

Per the National Sleep Foundation, adults should get ideally between 7 and 9 hours of sleep every night.

To keep your skin youthful and firm as well as avoid skin concerns, take care of your skin early by considering these lifestyle tips to increase skin firmness above.

After all, it takes intentional and proactive steps, responsible daily decisions, and effective skincare products to keep your skin at its best.
