As the winter chill sets in, many of us eagerly anticipate the joys of the season. Looking forward to cosy sweaters, hot cocoa, and the beauty of snow covered landscapes. However, with winter also comes the unwelcome companion of dry and cracked hands. There are ways to avoid dry hands in the winter months but it isn;t always easy. The combination of cold air, low humidity, and indoor heating can wreak havoc on our skin, leaving our hands feeling parched and uncomfortable.
There are ways to try and avoid dry hands in the winter and it’s more than just wearing gloves. We tend to wear gloves in the cold weather to keep our hands warm but it also acts as a protective layer.
As autumn hits the weather gets colder and it affects all of our skin not just our hands. The weather is a key contributor to multiple seasonal health concerns, with Seasonal Affective Disorder being as common as dry skin. Especially the skin which is exposed, such as our faces and our hands. We wear coats and jackets on our bodies but we quite often forget or don’t both with gloves. Our skin is affected by environmental issues all year long and seems to be that the colder weather is worse for most of us. It isn’t solely the weather as chemicals and frequent hand washing can also dry out your hands. But it seems to be the colder weather makes it more noticeable.
With that in mind, there are several remedies to help keep our hands hydrated. These tips will hopefully give you ways to prevent any chapped and cracked hands in the winter.
Avoid Dry Hands In Winter

Wear Gloves To Avoid Dry Hands
As mentioned above the number one top tip to avoid dry hands in winter is to wear gloves when outside. This however isn’t always that straightforward as for some people having gloves on isn’t practical. Some gloves that offer warmth are too thick to be practical for some tasks.
Having gloves as a winter fashion accessory outside of the home could be a great way to remember to wear them. Keeping them with your hat and scarf or even in your coat pocket so you don’t forget them.

Wearing gloves also goes for when using chemicals, particularly cleaning products, wear protective gloves. That barrier the glove puts in place is saving your hands from so much exposure and ultimately keeping them healthier and happier.
The classic yellow rubber washing up glove is the most practical glove for in-home cleaning. They are strong enough to withstand chemicals penetrating through them but flexible enough to do almost any task.
Keep Your Hands Hydrated
Your hands are drying out because they are losing moisture. You need to try and replace that moisture to help them stay hydrated. The best way to do this is to literally apply a moisturising hand cream multiple times a day. Every time you wash your hands, apply hand cream immediately after drying them.
The key to remembering to apply your hand cream is good product placement. Keep it in sight or in reach at all times. Only applying it once a day is inadequate and will not be effective enough protection. Have some in your handbag and your desk drawer, or even by your computer screen in the office. Seeing the product will encourage you to apply it more.
There are so many choices of brands and scents to choose from. I like to use natural products as this means less drying chemicals are going into my hands.
If you suffer from sensitive skin or have any skin conditions, you will be able to find a hand cream. You might want to speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice on your skin type if you are unsure.
For extreme cases, you might even consider light therapy to aid in the repair of your dry hands.
