With the popularity of trends such as the 10-step Korean skincare routine, you may think using more products can improve your skin. However, that’s not always the case. Even with an extensive lineup of products, you can still experience skin troubles that don’t seem to go away. Sometimes, it can even seem like all your additional steps may make things worse.

Does this beg the question: how much is enough to address your skin concerns?

Is Your Skincare Routine Enough?

Do you really need all 10 steps?

The simple answer is “No.” Adding more to your routine doesn’t necessarily make it better. Doing so can also leave more room for error, especially when it comes to mixing numerous active ingredients in one regimen. This can irritate — and even damage — your skin barrier. If you’re adamant to continue making use of the products you’ve already bought, it’s best to consult with a skincare specialist who will be able to guide you on which ingredients need to be separated into morning and night routines, and which ones are safe to use together.

Building the right skincare routine

Once you’ve met with an expert and learned more about which products work well together, you can begin curating your regimen. Ideally, you would want to start with four basic products — cleanser, treatment, moisturizer, and sunscreen — before adding more based on your skin’s needs. However, before you choose your products, there are still some things to keep in mind if you want to make sure you get the most out of your skincare routine.

1. Understand your skin type

One of the most common skincare mistakes you can make is using a product that’s not compatible with your skin type. What works for dry skin may not always work for oily skin and vice versa. Piling on products that aren’t suitable for your skin type can only aggravate any concerns you have.

If you’re unsure of what your skin type is, try washing your face with a gentle cleanser and leave your skin to dry for up to 30 minutes. Make sure not to apply any products afterwards, as well! Once the 30 minutes are up, you can get a good idea of what your skin type is. If you see a noticeable shine on your T-zone and cheek area, you have oily skin. If the shine is limited to just your forehead and nose, you either have normal or combination skin. However, if your skin feels tight, especially when making certain facial expressions or while talking, then you have dry skin.

2. More expensive doesn’t always mean better

When purchasing new skincare products, there can be a misconception that pricier products provide better results. Ultimately, though, a product’s price range does not affect its effectiveness. It’s possible for you to build an entirely budget-friendly skincare routine that works wonders for your skin.

Rather than looking at the price tag, it’s much more important to look at each item’s ingredient list and each component’s concentration. You’ll often find economical products with similar compositions as one from a luxury brand. They’ll only often differ in potency and application.

3. Stay consistent and remain patient

It’s important to keep in mind that you won’t see a drastic change in such a short amount of time. Rather than immediately throwing out products when you don’t see an automatic difference in your skin, it’s much better to remain consistent by using the same products in order to get the most out of each one. Typically, you’ll see a change around 3 to 6 weeks with proper use.

You may also experience purging when using skincare with active ingredients, such as chemical exfoliants — think AHAs and BHAs — and retinoids. This can manifest as small bumps, along with some whiteheads and blackheads. The purging stage usually lasts somewhere between 4 weeks to 2 months. However, this is a normal reaction that will alleviate by sticking to your routine. The only time that you should ditch a product is if your skin remains irritated even after the purging period.

Now that you have these tips in mind, it’s time to take a closer look at the products necessary in each routine.

Cleanser

A good cleanser can make or break or break any routine. It’s best to find something gentle enough not to strip your skin of its natural moisture, while also making sure it can break down dirt and grime at the end of the day. If you happen to wear makeup, you can look into cleansing balms or oil cleansers that can help break down your waterproof cosmetics.

Treatment

Depending on your skin’s needs, this step can vary. Drier skin types will want to make use of humectants or occlusives to keep moisture locked in. Some good examples would be hyaluronic acid or snail mucin. Meanwhile, for those who suffer from active breakouts, you can use an acne treatment with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. You could also go and have some professional skin treatments done on occasion. For instance, a face peel might be a good option for you, so looking up a VI Peel Alpharetta center, or a center near you, for help with your complexion can be very beneficial for your skin. So think about what you may need and how you can add that into your routine.

Moisturiser

Contrary to popular belief, a moisturizer is crucial for all skin types, regardless if you have oily or dry skin. This keeps your skin looking supple and hydrated, while also making sure to strengthen your skin barrier, especially if you happen to use a treatment with active ingredients. If you have oily skin and are worried about moisturizer making you look greasy, you can opt for a lighter gel-type formula.

Sunscreen

One of the most important yet often overlooked products in your skincare routine is SPF. It makes sure to protect your skin from sun damage, which is also a common cause of many skin concerns like ageing or sun spots. This is also something you should be using, even when you’re not directly exposed to sunlight.

The takeaway

To put it simply, you don’t need an extensive amount of products on your skincare shelf to give your skin the proper care it deserves. Investing in a smaller collection that actually focuses on your skin’s needs can be more than enough. With the tips mentioned above, you can curate a routine that’ll have your skin thriving and glowing.
