I’m sure most of us would like to slow down the ageing process.
Typically our skin is the telltale sign of how aged we are. Our skin is something we can’t stop ageing and is the natural part of growing and maturing.
But along our journey of life, we can take a number of steps which can help slow this process down and increase skin firmness.
With our skin being our biggest organ we should really take care of it. Keeping it as healthy as possible will show in its appearance on a day-to-day basis.
You might not be concerned that you have fine lines and wrinkles from a certain age, and that’s fine. It is all down to individual style and how we feel in our own skin. You can find a local aesthetic clinic by searching Botox in Rugby for example, or whatever your area is. These types of treatments like Botox are readily available locally.
But if you are curious about what steps you can take I have a few tips that will help.
Slow Down The Ageing Process

Keep Hydrated
Ensuring you are keeping your body hydrated will help keep your skin hydrated.
Up to 60% of an average adult body is made up of water. It is essential to aid physical and cognitive function that we drink enough water on a daily basis.
With our skin covering our entire bodies, this shows when we are not hydrated. Our complexion can become dull and less supple which will show signs of fine lines sooner than a hydrated body.
Water is such a necessary fluid, drinking 6-8 glasses is the recommended amount. This will change depending on each person’s lifestyle choices. If you are highly active you will need to drink more as well as if you have a larger body mass. Drinking water can offer so much internal richness.
Moisturise your skin
Giving our skin a helping hand with direct moisture will help long term to slow down the ageing process.
Sadly, not all of the moisturisers we use will be hugely effective and not all are suitable for all skin types.
Also, the epidermis which is the outer layer of the skin is the only layer out of the 3 which benefits directly.
The middle layer of skin, the dermis along with the lower layer, the hypodermis are hydrated via the blood vessels.
The crucial part of using a moisturiser is to keep the outer layer of your skin, which is the part which shows the wrinkles hydrated.
You can try adding a glycolic acid product into your skincare routine for a boost of hydration too.
Quit Smoking
People who smoke tend to age a lot quicker than those who don’t.
You may notice smokers have more fine lines and wrinkles around their mouths. This is because this area is directly affected by the chemicals in the cigarettes and the constant pursing of the lips to inhale a said cigarette. If you can imagine how many times on a daily basis you are forcing your lips into that position to hold the cigarette between them, this is a direct impact on those lines being permanent.
There are over 4,000 chemicals in a single cigarette, these impact the development of collagen and elastin in our bodies. Collagen is essential to maintain supple skin, we lose this as we age naturally without the added impact of nicotine.
Internally nicotine narrows our blood vessels which deliver oxygen and nutrients to our skin. This is depriving the lower and middle layers of our skin.
Exfoliate your body
Exfoliation removes the dead skin cells which are still attached to the outer layer of our skin.
By removing these dead cells it encourages new cells to grow.
Also, as you are making the skin cleaner and clearer this will be a direct passage for your moisturiser to work more effectively too. It will be easily absorbed by the new fresh skin cells rather than sitting on top of the dead ones.
Exfoliation does not need to be intense or vigorous as this can cause more harm than good. It is said that exfoliation is best to be done every other day or only twice a week. However, this depends on what pollutants you are exposed to on a daily basis. City based people will need to exfoliate more than countryside based people.
If you are a makeup wearer ensure this is removed the same day, never allow it to build up and clog your pores.
Sleep better at night
Having a good sleep routine and getting a sufficient amount of sleep is so important on a day to day. Your skin will show the next day when you are tired and prolonged tiredness will start to look more permanent.
Beauty sleep helps our skin recover overnight. Find ways to have the perfect nights sleep for you, find what works for you personally and implement this. I can highly suggest trying a weighted blanket over your legs to feel more rested.
When you don’t get the recommended 8 hours of sleep it messes with your hormones. Your skin repairs and rejuvenates when you are sleeping more so than when you are awake.
Ultimately we are going to age, this is life and our skin is there to get us through it. Taking care of your skin is as important as doing physical exercise.
Being conscious of how you are treating your skin will show in your appearance.
Fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots and sagging skin is natural and we all will suffer from at least 1 if not all of these skin concerns. Turning back time isn’t an option but we can try and stop it in its tracks.
